The Ragdoll Story,

Ann Baker is widely recognized as the founder and original breeder of Ragdoll cats. She began breeding Ragdolls in the 1960s in Riverside, California. Baker claimed that the breed was created through selective breeding of specific cats, including Josephine, a white Persian/Angora-type cat with striking blue eyes.

According to Baker, Josephine was injured in an accident and subsequently produced kittens with unique traits, such as a docile temperament, large size, and striking blue eyes. These kittens became the foundation of the Ragdoll breed.

Baker trademarked the name “Ragdoll” and established the International Ragdoll Cat Association (IRCA) to oversee the breed. She had strict guidelines for Ragdoll breeders, including specific breeding practices and requirements for registration.

However, Baker’s breeding methods and claims about the breed’s origins have been met with controversy and skepticism within the cat breeding community. Many breeders and organizations, including The International Cat Association (TICA), do not recognize Baker’s version of the breed’s history.

Despite the controversy, Baker’s influence on the Ragdoll breed cannot be denied. Her efforts helped popularize the breed and establish its distinctive characteristics, such as their gentle and affectionate nature, semi-longhair coat, and striking blue eyes.

Today, Ragdolls are a beloved and recognized breed worldwide. They are known for their friendly and laid-back personalities, making them popular as family pets. Ragdolls come in various colors and patterns, including seal, blue, chocolate, lilac, and more.

While Ann Baker’s role in the breed’s history is significant, it’s important to note that the modern Ragdoll breed has evolved and been further developed by many dedicated breeders who have worked to refine and improve the breed’s characteristics while adhering to recognized breeding standards and practices.
